We interviewed Jeff Volek, PhD, RD, exercise and nutrition researcher, fitness expert, and one of the authors of the New Atkins for a New You.

We talked about the idea of trading your fat for muscle; of actually shifting the tissues around. To achieve this, two core tenets are employed; low carbohydrate eating to stimulate fat burning and resistance training to stimulate muscle growth. In brief, low carbohydrate diets consistently result in greater fat loss than any other diet program, and that resistance exercise results in greater muscle growth than any other exercise program.

Because you're breaking down one tissue and building another. That's a rather difficult physiological effect to achieve.

The hypothesis of jeff's reserach was that restricting carbohydrates in combination with resistance training would promote the greatest fat loss while actually building muscle tissue. And that's exactly what he found. In fact the results exceeded my expectations. He had multiple subjects lose 15-20 pounds of fat while gaining 5-10 pounds of lean body mass.

What mechanism makes it possible for the body to build mass and lose mass at the same time?

There's a concept called nutrient partitioning. Basically, it's the process of diverting nutrients away from fat storage and toward muscle building. Historically, it's been used in animal research. For example, in the agricultural context, you want to efficiently grow cattle and to make them leaner and make them have less fat while feeding them less food. If you can partition nutrients away from fat and toward lean muscle, you could simultaneously lose body fat and preserve and even build muscle. For most us, that's sort of the Holy Grail in terms of what they're trying to achieve with their body composition.

The idea that Jeff's team was interested in studying is, "How can we do this through normal lifestyle modification--through dietary means and exercise?" In fact, that's what his research has focused on for the last decade: Trying to optimize body composition--and health as well.

One critical concept that's important is protein synthesis. In order to maintain your protein status in your body--mainly your skeletal muscle--you need to be in a positive protein balance. At all times you're constantly breaking down and synthesizing protein. So if you're breaking down protein at the same rate you're building protein, you'll be in protein balance.

But if you exercise and measure protein balance after you work out, you'll be in negative protein balance unless you eat some protein. So, in order to build muscle mass, we recommend eating a little protein after exercise.

There's also evidence that consuming protein before exercise has an even greater effect. The idea is that you eat protein to get some of the amino acids into your body and your bloodstream before exercise. When you work out, a good portion of your blood volume goes toward the active muscles that are engaged in the exercise, and more of the amino acids you ingested will be delivered to where you want them to go.

Based on several research studies that have investigated timing of nutrients with regards to workouts, we recommend that you eat high-quality protein before and after your workout. It doesn't take a lot of protein to get an effect on protein synthesis, so we're not providing an excess amount of protein. Ten to 20 grams seems to be the optimal amount.

High-quality  have all the essential amino acids--the ones your body doesn't make. Lower-quality protein sources generally come from plants and are lacking in one of the essential amino acids. Most proteins from animal sources, including dairy and most meats--beef, chicken and fish--all have the essential amino acids, so they're generally fairly high quality proteins.

I get answers, and very quickly, too - sending to the right link is best-this protein before and after exercise is a great idea, 20 carbs only? Excellent - if Atkins recommends this...must be gd!

I am doing this again too ....been on it since last thursday....so far i have lost a belt loop and my tummy seems tighter...i stay away from scales...they don't mean anything anyways. I love the shakes (meal replacement) I can get them and some endulge bars when i feel like a treat, at most pharmacys. when i don't have them i eat sugar free jello for a treat with a touch of cream...yummy. celery and cheese is a great snack and I try to look at this whole process like a gift to myself, which helps me when i feel like a donut or something stupid. I just signed up for the books but really could care less, don't really need them.....everything I need has always been on the websight. I so spoil myself on this.....my dinners are awesome. I love stuffed green peppers, made with just hamburg/onions/garlic/basil half a can of tomato paste, with a bit of water .....all fryed ...then i stuff the peppers with it and load it with cheese...parm/motz/chedd whatever i got and then bake about an hour. oh my god they are good! Try them and let me know.

This ismy second time around on this diet. Lost alot of weight the first time and went back to bad habits. I am not seeing the results on the scale as I saw first time on the diet. I have stayed on less than 20 g for over three weeks. I have lost 13 lbs and holding for over a week. I am exercising (mostly weights), starting more cardio this week. I do feel great, but not seeing my belly shrinking yet.

I am just starting this and am hopeful. How do I calculate net carbs?

Thank you.
jen
@ Bill Oakes, I did receive the book which is really useful, has carb counts for everything! they also sent 3 free sample atkins bars!
@ Krista Bussi, I find that the Atkins Bars are a great way to get through the evening munchies, you are only supposed to have 2 max per day, so i have one as a snack in the morning and then 1 as dessert in the evening. I also try to get out to a fitness class in the evening instead of watching TV like i used to, which makes it easier to avoid the snacking. Although snacking is okay as long as it is low-carb, try some pepperoni or your fav cheese, and lots of water!
Heather
I just joined!!! yay!!! ready to get healthy and happy! whootwhoot!...but I am a bit scared. Hope this works!

Is it acceptable to only have protein in the morning and have my allowable carbs later on in the day? Very hard to have veg. in the morning....

I have been going to the gym 5 days a week forever, thanks to Atkins I found out I was burning only the massive amount of carbs I was consuming, very enlightening! Now I will eat right and continue to work out and lose the pounds while burning FAT!

Hi im new to the website and started atkins Jan 1 2011 and have lost a total of 26lbs.I have so much energy and feel the greatest i have ever felt in a while. I did atkins back in 2007 and lost 44pounds but gained it all back. i think my problem was staying on the induction phase the whole time and not learning about the other phases to maintain it. this time around im going to check them out!
I just wish they would get the spots open where we can track our weight loss and what we eat? It just says "coming soon" Hi everyone!
BILL OAKES
Wow. I just got the pkg in the mail. Had tried the bars (best price @ Walmart) and love them so when got 3 in mail was really pleased. Started @ 219lbs now at 199lbs in 4 weeks but hit the so called "pateau" and am finding it hard to go down from here.Starting to watch things real close. Think that mixing bowl of salad needs to go down to a soup bowl size LOLOLO

Hello everyone. I just signed up today and looking forward to receiving my 'start up kit'. If I may, to Krista Bussi - have a cup of herbal tea in evening and keep your hands busy - try knitting, crocheting, puzzels. Anything to keep your hands busy and mind off of food! Good luck to everyone including me with your/my goals!!
Lizaan Proud
I have the same problem, have been sending mails, but no respons. for those who did receive the starter kit, how long did it take to arrive after you have signed up for it? I have lost 8 pounds in about 4 days, but now for the last 6 days, nothing :(, but I can feel in my clothes that I have lost weight.
Paul DesLauriers
I have been doing Atkins for 3 weeks and have lost 18 lbs.(From 188lbs to 170lbs on my 5 ft 8 inch frame.) My blood sugar has gone from 10.88 to between 5 and 6 as it is supposed to be. My Dr. says I will not need drugs to control it. He also said whatever I am doing,(Atkins plus exercise) it is working.
Paul DesLauriers
Dos anyone know where I should go to get an answer to a question like what does "effective carbs" mean? Its on a bottle of sugar free maple flavour syrup I just got.

Hi everyone. I did Atkins in 2005 and lost 40 lbs and felt amazing. I used to fry up hamburger patties, and cut up veggies and dip and sliced cheese to have on hand for snacks. I loved pureed pumpking and leak soup made with cream. Yummy. As for sugar cravings, you can make sugar free chocolate mousse. (Use chocolate made with Maltitol) and then a dollop of whipped cream. Your non-Atkins friends will love it. Being prepared is the best way to stay on this diet. Have only the right food in your fridge and make sure there's something on hand to grab and snack on. And I know this time, I just have to bring my own food to dinner parties in order to stay with it this time. Here's to being motivated to get 60 off this time!
BILL OAKES

I am a bit puzzled. I started induction with exercise 5 times a week. I lost but stabilized for over a week. I thought I would try the 'Fat Fast' and lost a bit, but now am up 2 kg's. The only med is Thyroid med and I am taking supplements (garlic, Omega 3, Chromium, etc).

This week I will go back on the 'Fat Fast' just under 1000 calories - with exercise and see - but am confused as this is suppose to be the kick start to weight loss?

I am doing the Atkins again. I did it a couple of years ago and lost weight. Went back to my old habits and gained. I found it hard to stick to the first time..but I managed to get thru phase 1. Wish me luck..
Florence McCormick
I am just about to start the program. I am waiting to recieve the free books. I just registered.I really hope this works. Wish me luck
Valerie Sherred
Hi there, I just signed up today and a little not sure how this all works. 20 net carbs for the induction stage! An apple is 17.3, i guess no fruit for awhile. Maybe the books will tell me more! I hope this works!
Carol Schmidt
Hi, I just received my books and bars. I have tried Atkins a few times in the past and had an awful problem with leg spasms so I stopped. However, I really am going to try it again.
I know that it is a loss of potassium but I do not know how to replace it. Has anyone else had this problem and do you have some suggestions as to what I can do to prevent them? I am starting Atkins tomorrow. Thanks!
Maggie Noonan
As far as cravings in the evening, try sugar free gelatin. Bacon rind snacks with cream cheese are delicious when you want a crispy snack. Atkins is a lifestyle choice and easier than most believe.
Chubby
I've looked everywhere for the 'Carb Counter' under 'Resources' tab .. can't find either - anyone got any ideas?
