Make the Transition to Fat Burning Easy
As you begin your odyssey through the phases of Atkins, your body will need
to make a number of adjustments as it focuses its priorities on burning fat.
Most of these changes are completed within the first few weeks, after which you
should have smooth sailing with few if any ongoing side effects.
However in those first few transition weeks, there are a few common problems
people encounter, but luckily they are pretty easy to manage. First, while your
shift from burning carbs to fat is in transition, don’t rush out and start new
or more intense exercise routine. Give your body the benefits of 2-3 weeks to
adjust before pushing out your exercise envelope.
Second, shifting over to fat metabolism and making those things called ketones,
has a diuretic effect on your kidneys, which means they speed up the amount of
salt and water they get rid of. Overall, that’s a good thing, because you will
feel less bloated, and people with high blood pressure often see their numbers
come down nicely in the first few days or weeks. But for many of us this can be
too much of a good thing, particularly if you weren’t bloated or have high
blood pressure to begin with.
The good news is that this is a cheap and easy problem to manage – all it takes
is drinking enough water and a cup or two of full sodium broth each day. This
broth, which you can make for yourself at home or from bouillon cubes, keeps
your circulation primed and ready for action despite the extra fluid and salt
being released by your kidneys. Get this down right at the start, and you won’t
have headaches, dizziness, fatigue, weak legs, or constipation. If any of these
symptoms do crop up, ask yourself, “have I had a cup of bouillon within the
last 6 hours”. Most often you will find the answer is no, and when you make
this your routine, these side effects are gone for good.
And yes, eating all of your vegetables from day one of the diet also helps with
these issues as well.
Here are some other signs to look for,:
- Ascent weakness: You feel weak when you walk up the stairs. This can be aggravated by hot weather, when you are already losing minerals through sweat, or if you are taking a diuretic. Be sure you are drinking plenty of water and drinking the broth or salting foods to taste to help alleviate this. If you are sodium sensitive you can try slowing down your weight loss by adding another serving of vegetables to your evening meal or one to two ounces of nuts or seeds daily. Once the symptoms go away, go back to your lower level of carb intake.
- Leg cramps at night: This is due to the rapid excretion of calcium, magnesium or potassium. Make sure you are getting enough of these minerals in your multivitamin supplement or take a separate multimineral supplement.
- Withdrawal symptoms: You might be addicted to the foods you consume every day, such as high caffeine intake, sugar, wheat and other foods that quickly change blood sugar levels. When you suddenly stop eating that food or ingredient, as you may do when you start Atkins, you may experience withdrawal symptoms, which range from cold sweats, fatigue and faintness to palpitations and headaches. The good news is that that the withdrawal process is usually over in about three days, and afterward you will feel fine. If you can’t make it through the withdrawal process, do it gradually by consuming progressively smaller amounts of the addictive food until you get to zero. The more severe your symptoms, the more you stand to gain by abandoning them.
Unless you are extremely metabolically resistant, you will start to lose considerable weight during Induction. The amount and rate at which you lose can vary dramatically depending on your age, level of activity, whether you are taking hormones or other drugs, your degree of metabolic resistance and other factors. The median weight loss from two weeks of doing Induction is 10 pounds for overweight males and six pounds for overweight females. But you do need to understand that initially, the weight that is lost is water weight, and Atkins is a particularly effective diuretic, so the water weight tends to come off fast. After the initial four to five days, the pounds that are lost will be primarily fat. Be patient. This first step of Induction is a natural part on your path to a lifestyle of healthy eating and feeling great. You can do this!

Tell me about your Induction experience. Did you have any of these symptoms, and if so, how did you overcome them? I’d love to hear! Please share your thoughts with the Atkins Community and also let me know what you’d like to hear about in the future.
It was hard for me to accept that by eating proten and fat I would loose weight and feel good, since I come from the school of thought that eating less fat and measure all your 5 oz of protein would make me loose weight. Have you read the book yet?
Also, how long for an avg person to start burning fats? 7 days??
thanks
My name is Sarah Gossen
I have always been a relatively fit girl, unfortunately as a teenager and young adult I sometimes resorted to very unsafe practices to attain or maintain a goal weight. After I had children I refused to return to those methods but broke once, a year after my second child was born I quickly lost those last fifteen pounds but as soon as I started regular eating habits again the weight came back on within the year. I am now back to where I was a year ago and am dedicating myself to atkins, as a safe way to attain and maintain a healthy weight, positive body image and mind set. I have a couple of questions if someone could help me I would be greatly appreciative and will pay the kindness forward. First of all I was wondering if it's normal to see a huge weight fluctuation in the first few days, I began on the 28th at 131, I weighed myself expecting to see no results on the 30th and was shocked to see 127, it is the first today and when I weighed myself this morning I was 130. is this normal? secondly, because I am considered to have a normal weight how much weight can I expect to lose through induction, and owl.
Thank you to anyone who takes the time to help me.

Thank you
This time induction is really kicking my butt! I have leg cramps, constant headaches, extreme fatigue and nausea. I'm so very grateful to have this website. Atkins has come such a long way in the past decade and this site was not around the first time I did this. Thanks to everyone at Atkins and now I'm off to drink my broth!!
this time I am really trying to eat enough and drink lots and this is near the end of my third week and have alter my foods and there is lots of egg recipes that are great, the trick is different omlettes and the other A.M. we had left over devilled eggs with bacon, great and have had left over portabello mushrooms with spinach and cheese, great so the idea is experiment with the food choices,

If you have questions or are looking for support - the best place to post is in the forums - they are monitored each day. If you are having issues withyour progress, post what you are eating along with any other relevant info - age, medications, amount of weight tolose etc and I am sure we can help. :)
I wish you all the luck in the world. Walking away may be the very thing that gets you on the road to becoming slim. And keeping on walking keep helping. GOOD LUCK - YOU WILL DO IT!!
A couple of quick questions - how tall are you? Are you breast feeding?
When you were losing - were you following the induction guidelines? I would suggest you go back to following the induction guidelines- ensuring you are eating all of your net carbs, veggie carbs, protein and fat. Stay there for a week or so then move to OWL and slowly move through the phases. Reading NANY - the newest atkins book is a great idea. Atkins isn't a quick fix - it have 4 phases you need to work through. There is lots of info on this site as welll. If you go to the forums under community support - then click getting started - you will find a thread titled top tips for new members - that may be helpful for you as well. Be patient. Sometimes hormones play a role with weight loss after having a baby. Also - if you have already lost 12 pounds that is a lot for less than a month. Weight loss typically slows as you get closer to your goal weight. Exercise may help too. :)
I started Atkins last year in May I lost the weight I wanted to loss and this was my 2nd time on Atkins by December and Christmas I gained weight back so in January I started it all again, It's now March and I have still been gaining weight. Q: how long does it take for your body to strt burning fat?.
Q: as I restarted atkins so soon after lapsing at Christmas has my body gone into starvation mode?.
Q: is all the fat I'm eating now being stored in my body? Is this why I'm gaining weight?.
Really confused as to why it's not working and I do enjoy the LC diet as I have been doing it now for 3months with no joy but not giving up.
Many thanks in advance
Welcome back to atkins.
If you follow the induction guidelines, most people reach ketosis (fat burning) within a couple of days.
How much weight do you have to lose?
It is difficult to know why you are gaining without knowing what you are eating. If you post a typical days menu, I can have a look. Why do you think you may be in starvation mode? Do you know apx how many calories you are eating each day? With a little more info - I am sure we can figure it out. :)
Can you post what you are eating in a typical day? Fluctuations are normal - you won't lose every week. How much water do you drink? How much weight do you have to lose?
Breakfast: 2 eggs, 1/2 avocado, tomato slice, sometimes in an omelette with some green onion or peppers, or just fried eggs with some veggies on the side
Lunch: 4 oz meat with a large salad with ranch dressing
Dinner: 4 oz meat with cooked veggies on the side
Snacks include sugar free jello with cool whip, maybe some celery with cream cheese, a muffin in a minute...
So far I've been making sure to have 8 glasses of water a day but my friend who lost 60 pounds on Atkins says to increase that to a gallon. Is that right?? Wow that seems like a lot. So I drank a gallon today and was in the bathroom all day as well. Can't see that working on a week day.
I have not cheated since starting a week and a half ago and am not seeing much loss. I chalked it up to the celebrex. I'm on a lower dose of pain killers now, still narcotic but non-addictive, and I have a clearer head so can do 15 min on the eliptical safely without pain now most days, but no more.
Maybe I'm just not giving it enough time but I'm reading other success stories and I can't see moving on past induction after 2 weeks if I haven't seen any weight loss. I am noticing I need more fibre. I'm tracking my food on livestrong.com so can see the percentages of my daily intake re: fat and protein and carbs. So far I'm averaging 25 - 30% protein, 60 - 65% fat, and 20 carbs.
Any advice would be helpful. The doc says that every pound of extra weight I carry puts 6 pounds of extra strain on my fused ankle, so I need to do this and I am determined. The medication just appears to be working against me.
Medication can sometimes hinder weight loss efforts. How tall are you? 4 ounces of protein per meal is the low end of the guideline. Are you adding any fat to your meals? Induction is high fat. Arwe you getting 12-15 net carbs from veggies - it can be harder to reach that amount with salad veggies. Cool whip is not acceptable. You can have heavy whipping cream - but it is limited. Do you know how many calories you are eating? The guideline for water is 64 ounces min. Personally I do not believe that is enough. How much weight do you want to lose?
I've noticed I've craved sweets lately and that's odd because I don't ever go for sweets at all. We rarely eat desserts. My husband is diabetic so we don't use sugar at home. Hmmm.. Thanks for the input. I'm not giving up.
I am going to suggest you go through your menu very thoroughly - since you mentioned you have been craving sweets lately - it may be that you are eating hidden carbs someplace. Or - sometime artificial sweetener can cause cravings as well. Do you drink anything besides water? And be sure to ditch the cool whip
Am i really going to lose weight? i've tried so many diets before. I would really like to shave off 50 pounds.
I sure hope you will support me. I am going to need it.

Congrats on your excellent progress! There is no set time to stay in each rung. You need to experiment with different food within the rung. After you have tried different foods, you can move onto the next rung. You also increase your net carbs by five until your weight loss stops - this will tell you what your CLL is. Once you stop losing, you back off the carbs to the level where you were losing again. You can spend a couple of weeks in each rung or longer if you want to. It takes time to move through the rungs
